The Parish Church of
St Matthew Oxhey
Fr David Shepherd
The Painting of Reverend Newton Price by Mary Evelina Kindon (c.1831?-1919)
We do not know who commissioned this painting, but it has been handed down through
Newton Price’s family. Sadly, it is not in it’s original state. The Reverend Everhard
Rowe, uncle of the present owner, reduced it substantially in size, but we have a
black and white photograph of the original painting for comparison.
The artist Mary Kindon was born in Victorian London and adopted a style that was
being taught in the more progressive continental academies. She often painted mothers
and children and seems to have been fond of painting girls in white dresses. She
lived within our parish, at St. George, Chalk Hill, Oxhey, until 1919.
She exhibited widely, including Société des Artistes Français, the Paris Salon, the
Society of Women Artists and the Royal Academy. She also exhibited at the Bushey
Society of Artists in Rudolph Road. Bushey Museum has three works by her in its collections.
We are grateful to Bushey Museum for providing information about the artist.
